when configuring email credentials, the steps differ depending on whether you are using gmail or another email domain (e g , outlook, yahoo, custom domain) 1\ gmail accounts (requires app password) 🔒 why app password? gmail does not allow using your original password for third party apps or smtp/imap connections google enforces this for security reasons protects your main google account password works only with apps/services you’ve explicitly authorized prevents unauthorized access if the credentials are leaked 👉 therefore, for gmail, you must use an app password instead of your normal gmail password steps to create an app password enable 2 step verification go to google account security under "signing in to google" , enable 2 step verification generate app password after enabling, return to google account security search app password in the search option click app passwords give app name to generate the app password click create copy the 16 character password (this will replace your gmail password in configurations) gmail imap (incoming mail) configurationf for receiving emails using imap (recommended) imap host imap gmail com port (ssl) 993 username your full gmail address (example\@gmail com) password the generated app password 2\ other email domains (no app password needed) for non gmail accounts (e g , outlook, yahoo, zoho, custom domain emails), you usually use your original email password sometimes you may enable "allow less secure apps" or generate an app password (yahoo also requires app passwords if 2fa is enabled) other email (incoming mail) configuration for receiving emails using imap (recommended) imap host imap gmail com port (ssl) 993 username your full gmail address (example\@gmail com) password the generated app password summary if gmail → use app password (not your real password) if other domain → usually original password is enough (unless the provider enforces 2fa, like yahoo)
